A Chance to be Saved – A Journey into the Light and Darkness of Eviatar Banai

yes / 2025
Documentary Series

For 11 years, acclaimed director Doron Tsabari documented one of Israel’s most beloved artists. The intimate and revealing documentation is at the center of a monumental four-part series.

Eviatar Banai is a musical genius and a great poet, and an artist whose songs have been turned into hymns and prayers by multitudes of Israelis, both young and old, religious and secular, Ashkenazi and Mizrahi, and who find comfort and meaning in them.

In his personal life, Banai is a man with a dual identity: on his “Jewish” side, he is a devout Haredi who observes the commandments and studies rabbinical studies with the intention of receiving ordination and becoming a rabbi. On his “Israeli” side, Banai is a rock star who fills halls with performances that attract a large and loyal audience. A rock star with a kippah, who seeks to open the gates of heaven with his songs and perform Kiddush Hashem on stage.

This long-term, intimate documentation, which is in itself unprecedented in Israeli documentary work, in addition to rare archives from all periods and, of course, an abundance of beloved music – brings to the screen a broad and very moving work, which sheds light on the man whose music became a cornerstone of Israeli culture.
